SUGARCANE PANEL
House of No Waste Competition
In 2025, I participated in the UNU‑FLORES House of No Waste competition, where my project was featured on the online exhibition platform.
With over 500 million tonnes of sugarcane waste produced each year, this project shifts it from an overlooked by-product into a structural wall panel. With sugarcane waste being mostly used as a filler in materials like concrete or brick, there is little exploration of it as a system in its own right. This project instead treats it as a panel system, making construction faster, simpler and easier to scale.
Using sugarcane bagasse fibre and ash, the system forms structural insulated panels—made entirely from sugarcane waste from the outer skin to the insulation—that can be crushed and remade into new panels, instead of remaining as fixed non-reusable materials. The panels are explored within an A-frame modular housing setup, demonstrating how they can be applied in repeatable forms to create flexible and adaptable living layouts, with the potential to generate a range of modular dwellings in different configurations.
The project explores how architecture can operate not as a final product, but as an adaptable system—one that responds to resource scarcity while enabling flexible and repeatable forms of housing.
